I went to Las Vegas with my girlfriend and her cousins to celebrate our 21st birthdays and had a really good time (though I did neither drive well, nor sleep carefully). If it were not so expensive, I think I’d actually miss it a bit. There is something about this place that is so alive at all hours that I find fascinating. It reminded me of being in Manhattan, where I thought everything was ridiculously over-the-top, only this time, they were really ridiculously over-the-top.
For example, La Reve. This Circ du Soleil inspired show was really amazing. The main attraction was water. People diving into water, dancers splashing in the water, pillars emerging from the water, water being colored by light, and many more. The show paints a vivid picture of a dream where movements get stretched out and exaggerated and disorder comes in the form of heavy rain. I could not help but think about how much water gets wasted at each of these shows. Or at the fountain show at the Belagio. Or all those faux waterfalls like at the Wynn. There is a secret competition of who can out due who in terms of wasting water in the middle of the desert. I really want to go to Dubai now.
I watched a man lose a significant portion of my college tuition in
about 30 seconds. He was playing blackjack at the \1000 on one hand, and \$2000 on another. He had a woman with him who was betting less than the minimum, but
I’m sure the casino didn’t mind. The dealer deals the cards. I
don’t quite remember what the man and woman had, but the dealer
dealt herself a 10. She checks her card, and sure enough, blackjack. The weird thing, is that this seemed like nothing to him.
I, on the other hand, was making money. I put in \2.09! Take that Vegas! Boy was I
feeling lucky.
