Election 2008

The election seems to have come to a close and all those fears of Obama not winning have been put to rest. I think it’s bad that the most settling thing about this news, is that Sarah Palin is not the next vice president. Despite the title, the rest of this post has nothing to do with the election. I still have to catch up on the debates. (I haven’t watched the 3rd one!)

I love websites like these, that are only there to become some sort of internet meme. Another one that I saw on reddit that has nothing to do with politics was unicode snowman. The internet never ceases to amaze me. And to think that Google seems to have most of this crap sorted out.

I drove to Davis this weekend to visit my girlfriend. Usually when I drive, I like to listen to music. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any good CDs laying around, and my MP3 player was sent in for repairs. Therefore, I resorted to some old rap/hip-hop CDs I used to listen to back in middle school. Ahh, the memories. For example, one song, “Somebody Like Me” by Silkk the Shocker has the following lyrics:

would you fall for a thug like me?

It’s pretty embarassing, but I used to think that I might someday be in this dilemma. That is, the girl of my dreams can’t make peace with the fact that I was too out of control. We all know how that story turned out.

I think I pay attention to lyrics more than most people, but I think I was being especially keen this weekend. You hear references to how it’s “1999, and it’s our turn to shine” and how “20 inch TV’s” are a must. And there seemed to be more female rappers back then who loved to talk about how no man could be good enough for them.

I wonder what happened to them all. How long do the millions of dollars last? Maybe when that runs out, they’ll come back onto the scene.

There’s something about the election, internet memes, and old rap music that reminds me of how fleeting each moment is. It’s strange how quickly they come and go, and how easy it is to look back old memories and comment how this or that was important 2 elections ago, 2 hours ago, or 2 music phases ago. And, how important you think each one is in one moment, and how quickly you forget about it in the next. Anyhow, this will so be 2 blog posts ago in a week—seriously, get with the program.
