The first thing I did when I got back to campus was clean my room. I had finished finals two days early and somehow still left my room in a mess. It doesn’t help that the vacuum cleaner here is broken. That makes me less motivated to clear off my floor.
It took about 3 hours to sort through, organize, and throw alway all the crap that had accumulated over the quarter. Actually, I found out that I never fully unpacked when moving in so I also got that done. In the end, my room looked more or less the same, just things were in neater stacks and most of the table tops were clear of random scraps.
After being able to appreciate my clean room for all it was, I’ve decided to make my new year resolution to try to keep a clean room. I realized that once you have a clean room, upkeep is not that much extra. In fact, sparing 5-10 minutes every day is probably enough for me to manage this (hopefully). While brushing my teeth, I walk around my room and plan out exactly what I’ll clean in those 5 minutes. It’s super efficient and wonderful.
I think more people would be able to keep their rooms clean if they can get over the hump of one huge cleanup job and then continuing to dedicate a few minutes every day.
