This quarter, I built a new desktop. The power supply in the old one died out and I figured that it was time for an upgrade. I was surprised how cheap a decent machine turned out to be. Anyhow, I have my desktop running 24/7 and I’ve been trying to identify the times I actually need to turn my laptop on. I’ve narrowed it down to a few pretty simple times:
- Playing music
- Printing
- Watching lectures/videos in general
The dependence on the first two are very easily solved. I don’t know to what extent I could solve the last one. It’s strange though. I think if I could solve all three, I would quickly proceed with it. But since the last one won’t fall easily, I figured I might as well keep my laptop on. I think I want to eventually not have to turn on my laptop unless I’m moving around.
Our paper deadline passed so I’ve had a bit more free time in my lab. I’ve been meaning to get a clean OS installed on my machine—on the current one, I don’t have admin priveleges, so I can’t install anything! After my first attempt at installing Ubuntu, I realized I had burned the wrong CD. I think if it were any other person, they would give up immediately after the first try doesn’t work. Microsoft actually has it a lot harder than you think! They have to deal with users that are scared of technology that might now work.
