This week is PhD admit weekend so there has been a lot of commotion around Gates. A bunch of admits came into our office looking to talk to other PhD students here, supposedly about their time as a grad student. I sat more or less minding my own business, but I couldn’t help but overhear their conversation. They went on arguing about some graphics related stuff. It was a lot of fancy talk.
Later, during TGIF, I talked to my grad student about possibly going to grad school. I told him how I don’t think I could ever be as high caliber as the students that came by today. It was crazy to think that they were the same year as me, yet they had done so much more.
He then told me about his experience of going to admit weekend, and how our school’s admit weekend was the most intimidating. For whatever reason, admits here felt the need to drop as many fancy words as they could, to prove that they really belong. I don’t know how much I believe that… I guess there’s only one way to find out.
i think you should find out. ... and you can be fancy too. :)
