I spent the last four days visiting my high school friends in San Diego. The trip was really fun. I really like driving on road trips so the 7 hour ride both ways was not too bad. I dragged one of my high school friends along to keep me company and he didn’t get entirely sick of me by the end. These are good signs.
In San Diego, I went to two beaches where my old friend, Jonny, and I relived our bouldering days. We found some cool rock formations there and started climbing them while our other non-climbing friends watched (in boredom). Climbing on the beach is a bit weird. There’s sand everywhere so the holds are slippery. Sometimes, the rocks chip off because they’ve been worn down by the waves. Beach sand becomes a natural crash pad. It was a lot of fun for me since I haven’t found the time to climb in months. On the topic of climbing, Jonny and I also climbed the Bear at UCSD in the middle of the night. We made a new route that goes around the bear’s right toe. I told Jonny to spread the word to other UCSD climbers. Maybe the route isn’t interesting enough though.
I played pool a few times and re-discovered the fact that the geometry that maps out in my head does not translate into reality very well. I’d imagine golf is another game I can picture myself being good at but actually sucking at pretty badly. I guess you can say the same about me for most sports. After taking Geometric Algorithms, I think you can say the same about geometry in general.
We played a lot of Team Fortress 2 at night. It’s kind of sad how similar our lives are in San Diego and our hometown. The main difference seems to be that there is a beach in one, and not in the other. We watched Duplicity which was OK. Entertaining, but it had so much more potential.
On the drive up, I stopped by to visit two of my classmates. I got to see two more beaches, one of them being Santa Monica (which is beautiful). The freeways in LA are terrible, but other than that, I don’t see what all the Norcal vs. Socal fuss is all about.
